I haven?t blogged much these days.Real Life has taken my full attention...Some of you know this, but one of the leads in Courtney?s neuro stimulater has traveled up her spine and curved around her neck.It has taken quite awhile to get approval for the procedure. We have approval, and are now awaiting a surgery date. All indications point to a straight forward repair. The recovery time is six weeks...We have done a fair job of navigating the health food stores. We found a rice tortilla at Trader Joe?s, a recipe for Turkey gyros, and have learned to love sweet potato fries. The below photo was taken on a good day before allergy testing:She had just gotten her hair done, and we took some pictures. She rallied for this shot, and a few others, but needed the rest of day to be tranquil. This shot was taken 6 weeks later, after she had her roots done and she had been clear of those foods for a few weeks...For those suffering with chronic illness, I would strongly recommend allergy testing. She has regressed some, since this picture was taken. It could be unrelated, but as I began to get increased mobility, hers decreased. As my return to work date looms closer on the horizon her depression has begun to surface...She spends her life waiting for someone to return home from work, and take her to her appointments.I didn?t fully see this, until I broke my toe.Yesterday, since I was off work, we contacted her old hypnotherapist in Santa Monica.Courtney and Kathryn share an uncommon bond.As a teen, Courtney was a patient of the UCLA Ped.Pain center. As an adult, we have been able to replace each one of her alternative health care treatments with local providers.Kathryn is the exception....After her appointment, we ate a picnic lunch at Will Roger?s State Beach park. |
Kathryn is the exception....After her appointment, we ate a picnic lunch at Will Roger?s State Beach park. She noticed a swing set on the sand.Ironically, a few days earlier, Courtney was lamenting the lack of swing set at our local park. So, she ventured down...I came out of the restroom to see her in full swing.Toes pointed towards the sky and her head slanted towards the sand. She was as high as the swing chains would allow...I?m not a morning person. So, I unfortunately left my camera at home. She saw me watching, and the spell was broken....her swinging slowed to a stop and she made her way back up from the sand. The difference in her face, when she returned to the grass opened my eyes to how mundane her life had become.I know some changes have to be made.If these are the best days of her life, they are being wasted. If the mental illness can be stopped from progressing, it can?t be done with a life spent on the couch watching movies...Part of the reason, I continue to work is to finance the alternative therapy that isn?t covered by her insurance benefits.Today, that burden was lifted...Courtney and I had a meeting at the Social Security Office. After several months of waiting, we received the news that she qualifies for benefits. She can now pay for her own treatments.I returned home humbled by answered prayer, and a bit proud of the two of us.We had navigated the lengthy process with minimal help...While savoring the moment, I looked down and noticed that I was wearing my nice cream sweater inside out.....I?ve got some hard choices to make and I need help dressing myself.... |
