I was at work today and overheard a conversation between two attorneys.?They were discussing the damage society has on the development of children.?Specifically, they were talking about the need children have, apparently, to be cruel to others.I have my own issues on that front.?I was taunted mercilessly as a child for being overweight.?It sucked, but you know what??I was not alone.?Most of the kids around me had their own characteristics that were regularly subjected to ridicule.?I always longed for the day that I would be free to enter a world of adults who would know better.?All these many years later, I realize that meanness is not reserved for the ignorance of childhood.?It goes with us our entire lives. For some reason, most people, myself included, feel the need to demeans others. And that is so f**cked up.What is wrong with us?"She's too thin."?Skinny people probably get this a lot, and I am certain it hurts.?I think it does hurt, because the inference typically made is that they have some form of eating disorder.?When you consider that such disorders are the result of some mental perception of the individual, it IS damaging.?Having people insinuate that you have some mental disorder and are starving yourself can be pretty offensive, particularly when you know that your don't have an eating disorder.?My mother-in-law and I have discussed this issue.?She gets to be one of the thin ones.?I still love her, though.?No one is perfect."She's too fat."?

No one is perfect."She's too fat."?The issue of obesity pisses me off.?It is a punchline in an Eddie Murphy movie, the stuff of comments such as, "Are you sure you wouldn't like to try the light vinaigrette dressing??It has ___ calories per serving."?I find it incredibly sad that fat people, for the most part, are often targeted with only the random person jumping to their defense.?Clothes are uglier, seats may be uncomfortable.?More than anything else, though, there is the constant disapproval that you can see one's eyes that lets you know what they are thinking.?And Eddie Murphy has made millions from making jokes about them . . .as if it's a joke. It's not."She's such a slut."?This one is probably more common.?Sex sells, after all.?We see it everywhere, and we have our own conceptions of propriety.?And for whatever reason, we love to bring up the topic in criticism of those who are blatantly sexual, with a constant string of boyfriends.?"Boys only like her because she will sleep with anyone."?As if it's our business."She's a prude."?If she would just loosen up a little, maybe she could find someone.?She can't handle any discussion on human sexuality; therefore, she must have some hangups about sex.?Perhaps her values preclude her from discussing the subject.?

Perhaps her values preclude her from discussing the subject.?I don't know, but there is probably nothing quite as enjoyable as having others weigh in on your sexuality, or lack of same."Anyone who reads that blog clearly has the IQ of a gnat."?I KNOW most of you have seen this.?I have.?And more often than not, there is no respect for the reader.?For that matter, it could be taken as criticism by a blogger, who basically receives the message that his or her writing is so sophomoric that only stupid people could possible appreciate it."He's just too nice."?Good lord, seriously??This one is probably one of the ones that grates on my last nerve the most.?Is the characteristic of niceness really that unattractive??Do we want him to toughen up and act like a dick?"If you listen to, and enjoy, Miley Cyrus's new song, you clearly have no musical taste."?What is up with that??Really???Perhaps that person likes a wide variety of music and can admit that he or she enjoys music by pop princesses.?And??Rap is crap.?Country sucks ass and is whiny.?Metal is not music.?"You like JaRule??

"You like JaRule??He has no musical talent!"?And the underlying message is that the fan clearly has no concept of what qualifies as good music.?DISCLAIMER THANKS TO TOKEN:?Actually, the one about JaRule is valid.?He does lack talent.?Kidding.?Sorta.?Not really.?At all.The list could go on and on, and I am sure some of you will name some more, but in thinking about this facet of human nature, I wondered why we feel the need to denigrate another??Is it that we are so insecure that we feel the need to make others feel badly about themselves??Is it an avoidance technique??Bad parenting??Lack of simple concepts of courtesy??Is it to make people laugh??Or is it nothing more than people being cruel??I don't know what it is. Whatever it is, we all do it, when it's just not necessary, and the potential damage caused by our thoughtlessness might linger with our victim for the rest of their lives.?Not only could they end up hurting or killing themselves, it could also lead to injury to others as someone who feels rejected by society for "unattractive qualities" decides to strike back. When we all have our own flaws and issues, this tendency to harp on the perceived flaws of others is truly so fucked up.?
