| Much to my own surprise in many ways, last year I joined a writing group.I found this group through a website called meetup.com, which gathers people around an interest via the 'net, and encourgaes them to meet up in real life and have fun.I've always been against writing groups, though.I think it started in college.See, when I was in college (good ol' SUNY New Paltz, where they have a place just off campus called "the tripping fields" -- can you say "party school"?), I was Mr. Non-Conformist.Mr. Individual.Couldn't sign me up for no stinkin' frat, no way.Join some campus group or another?Methinks not.And certainly I wasn't going to go to some powder-puff writing group and sit around with a bunch of know-nothing numbskulls and talk about "craft."Fuck that noise.(Yeah, I was/am an arrogant bastard.)Then after college I started The Whirligig lit-zine, and all of a sudden I was part of the literary underground and my anti-writing group sentiment grew. |
| (Yeah, I was/am an arrogant bastard.)Then after college I started The Whirligig lit-zine, and all of a sudden I was part of the literary underground and my anti-writing group sentiment grew.We undergrounders are an individualistic bunch.So, when the Underground Literary Alliance (a group that was getting publicity in places like the NY Post and elsewhere) recruited me I said No.(One of the biggest mistakes of my life.)I didn't collaborate with any other zines, or zine-fests, or anything.I was still Mr. Non-Conformist, even though such a stance was getting me nowhere and nowhere QUICK.So, last year, I started thinking...Well, being Mr. Individualist isn't really quite...working.Maybe I should pull a George Costanza and start doing the Opposite.And you know what?So far, it's been great.I've met cool people, learned a lot, and improved my writing a TON.So, have you ever been involved in a writing group?What was your experience like? |
